Focus and Self-control

What a beautiful week it has been here in Northeast, Ohio. The sunny skies and warm temperatures have us all hoping that we will get a bit of fall weather this year before “old man winter” arrives! The kids have loved the sunshine and being outdoors. I know as a mom I often ask myself, are my children getting enough time outdoors? The experiences children acquire during time in nature cannot be replaced by any computer screen, television show, game, or structured sport. Current research also indicates that academic success is also linked to the amount of time children spend outdoors. TLC is dedicated to making sure your children get outdoors at least 30 minutes a day if not more! For the first five years of a child's life it is recommended that children spend at least an hour in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, we all know that this beautiful weather will not last forever.

“There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” - Ranulph Fiennes

We ask that you begin sending in your “winter gear” for your child! We would love if you could leave the clothing here through the week so we are always PREPARED for playing outside everyday! We will be going outside each day as long as the temperature is 30 degrees or higher!

As a former teacher, I try not to comment on the Common Core debate. It can often get heated and unfortunately many opinions are lost in the “WHAT” are children learning when in actuality the transformation that is undeniably necessary in education is the “HOW” children are learning in classrooms around the country. Our children live in a very different world today than ever before. So wouldn’t common sense tell us that if we are preparing children for the future shouldn’t our model of education look differently than it did 30 years ago?

What does education look like today?  In today’s classroom you no longer see the quiet rows of students simply listening to the teacher lecture. What we see are small groups of actively engaged learners. They are exploring and discussing a variety of concepts and challenging each other to think deeply or perhaps even in a new and innovative way. The teachers are moving throughout the classroom, observing, documenting, asking questions, and guiding students into making sense of their own learning without just handing them the knowledge.

Schools are now focusing on 21st Century Skills which include collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking. The focus is no longer on memorization of facts but rather creating a more project-based approach where children are challenged to work in teams to problem solve around real-life scenarios.

So, is TLC creating this type of environment that encourages problem solving, team work, and effective communication skills? As I walked through classrooms today I saw exactly that! Children are so capable and the amount of creativity and collaboration throughout the building today was so fun to see!  Enjoy!
