This short video talks about the importance of risk taking during childhood and what that looks when practiced effectively. I know as a staff, we are evaluating how we handle risk to make sure we align ourselves with what is best for children.
This video really challenged me to evaluate myself as a parent, take a deep breath, and step back a little bit. Doing a risk analysis to determine whether the benefit of the risk outweighs the potential learning that could come from the risk is now part of my parenting.
Maybe what the kids of this generation need more of is “less of us.” What they need more of is encouragement for them to problem solve, try something new, and sometimes feel disappointment. If we are constantly trying to set them up for success, how will they deal with life when things don’t work out how they wanted or planned?
